Ms. Corinne Montivery, a representative of the Secretary-General of UNCITRAL (United Nations Commission on International Trade Law) visited the Indonesian Law Developmenet Agency (BPHN) on the October 3, 2013. In the meeting attended by government lawyers, legal scholars, law makers, judges, academics and other relevant government agencies, she delivered a speech on the role of UNCITRAL in the harmonisation of international trade law. Some works of the UNCITRAL were discussed in the meeting such as United Nations Convention on the Contracts for the International Sale of Goods (CISG) and Model Law on International Commercial Arbitration. Indonesia is now preparing for the ratification of the CISG.
The meeting urged the government to amend Law No 30/1999 on Arbitration and ADR to be consistent with the UNCITRAL Model Law. Indonesian speaker, Prof Sunaryati Hartono, encouraged the Indonesia government to be more active in the UNCITRAL especially in the UNCITRAL working groups. Prof Sunaryati pointed out the importance of UNCITRAL texts for the legal reform in Indonesia. Prof Huala Adolf, a law professor from Padjajaran University, explained the meeting that Indonesia has become a member of UNCITRAL from 2013 to 2019 and its membership should be beneficial for Indonesia. The meeting was very productive and reached a mutual understanding between the National Law Development Agency and UNCITRAL to work together in the harmonisation and legal reform on international trade and business law in the future.
